While Marvel has been doing incredibly well on Netflix, its adventures in television stand in sharp contrast. Where DC is rapidly taking over the CW and has shows all over the dial elsewhere, Marvel currently only has one series, Agents of SHIELD, on the air. ABC claims that won’t last long, but how likely is that to be true?
ABC head Channing Dungey commented that, in fact, Marvel has some more shows in the works:
Since I’ve been in this role, we’ve been in a number of really terrific conversations with the Marvel team, [including] sitting down [with Marvel] in two weeks to discuss our next steps…We’re looking at a number of different things. Some of them are projects that we were working on before and some of them are totally new ideas and IP.
It’s worth noting that Marvel is making some moves to create success on the small screen. Cloak And Dagger is coming to Freeform, and rumors about a comedy series featuring Damage Control, the people who clean up after superheroes, keep surfacing. But on the flip side, it’s worth asking whether anything will come of these meetings. As we’ve noted elsewhere, ABC hasn’t shown a particular taste for genre fare: Agents of SHIELD is an odd fit among the legal dramas, Shakespeare sequels, and sitcoms that make up most of its fall lineup. In fact, the only other genre series on the network is Time After Time, a remake of the Nicholas Meyer movie from the writer of Scream.
Of course, that doesn’t mean ABC is rejecting genre shows out of hand. Unsurprisingly, the network is trying to get a Star Wars series off the ground. But considering the success of Preacher, it might be worth ABC and Marvel asking where else Marvel might fit in.
