Midnight Special is a movie in danger of slipping through the cracks, and increasingly it looks like it really shouldn’t. Especially now that we’ve gotten a load of the first clip from director Jeff Nichols’ first studio effort, and it’s some intriguing stuff.
Midnight Special follows a father and son as they go on the run from religious extremists and the police. Turns out the boy, Alton, has some form of special power that everybody wants a piece of, while his father wants him to just live a normal life. It’s especially attention-getting because of Nichols’ track record. He’s likely going to break through with the period drama Loving this year, but he’s spent a lot of time working with subtle, disquieting genre thrillers like Take Shelter, and this appears to be in the same mold. Nichols has said he was inspired by genre stalwart John Carpenter and this definitely has that feel.
That said, it’s got a tough release date. It arrives the weekend before Batman V. Superman, so, if you like the clip, and word out of Berlin and SXSW is good, perhaps give it a shot the weekend of March 18.
