Ever since it was announced, fans had one question about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: If it features the Death Star are we going to see any villains from the original trilogy? Entertainment Weekly now has the answer. Spoilers below!
First off, yes, Darth Vader will indeed be turning up in Rogue One. It’s not clear how much of a role the Dark Lord of the Sith will play, except that he’s not the main antagonist. EW notes that belongs to master of capes Ben Mendelsohn, who will be backstabbing his way up the ladder while trying to stay out of Vader’s way. Of course, considering Mendelsohn’s character is nowhere to be found on the Death Star by the time of A New Hope, maybe we should assume that goes poorly for him?
EW also clears up a few things. Heroine Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), for example, has annoyed both the Empire and the Rebellion with her antics, and is taking this heist to clear the books after getting arrested by Rebellion troops. Mads Mikkelsen, who plays her father, is a scientist that both sides want, and is compared to scientists like Robert Oppenheimer, one of the minds behind the nuclear bomb.
Most intriguing, though, is the claim that Forrest Whitaker is playing a character who “has a past that Star Wars completists will recognize immediately when they see his name, even if he looks very different than the way they’ve seen him elsewhere.” We’ll find out what that means soon enough; the issue is on stands Friday, EW has planned a further reveal later today, and Rogue One will be out this December.
