Sinister Six has been a much-anticipated film that we have been wanting to come sooner rather than later. But with Sony allowing Spider-Man to go to the MCU side of the fence, this film has unfortunately gotten the axe. Or has it?
According to io9, Drew Goddard, Sinister Six’s screenwriter and director hopeful, has high hopes for the movie that has us sitting with our fingers crossed. Goddard spoke to io9 and seemed excited for what’s to come, as he specifically penned the screenplay so it could stand on its own feet:
“My vision of that movie was a summer annual. So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”
It’s also encouraging to hear that Goddard is in the same lane as Marvel when it comes to where they are taking Spider-Man. Goddard commented to io9 about Spidey’s direction and seemed upbeat about what could happen down the line:
“The tricky part about all this is I love this plan. I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that’s a great thing. I’m on board with that decision because as a fan that’s what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you’ve gotta play the long game.”
Goddard says something that is vital to this entire equation: “As a fan.” He understands how to marry being a fanboy and a filmmaker together. And no, fanboy writer/directors do not always translate. Sometimes, they can even poison these kinds of movies. But going by Goddard’s past (The Cabin in the Woods, his involvement with Daredevil), he gets it. And we know that he is the right person for this job.
It will take A LOT to get us excited, again, for Spider-Man. This character, more than any other, has been butchered eight ways from Sunday. It’s been an exhausting ride. But with Goddard getting further entrenched, we have confidence things might shake out nicely both for Sinister Six and the new Spider-Man films.
