Andy Serkis is privy to less information about Star Wars: The Force Awakens than you might think, despite playing one of the key bad guys, Supreme Leader Snoke. In fact, he didn’t even know what his character was going to look like until very, very recently. But he does have a few tantalizing hints for us.
Snoke, it turns out, has had a few run-ins with… well, someone, as Serkis explains:
Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.
So, he got the crap beat out of him, and he’s a fan of the Empire. Hmmmm, perhaps he was trapped on a certain fully operational battle station? Anyway, Serkis notes that the design of Snoke would have been effectively impossible with practical effects; the character is too tall and the facial design, in Serkis’ words, is “too extreme.” He also notes that he and J.J. Abrams have been working on his performance right up to the wire.
Snoke’s motives and ultimate goals are a mystery, except Serkis notes he’s a long-term planner. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait very long to see what he’s up to; Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives Dec. 18.
