If you watch this trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and are overcome with an indescribable wave of nostalgia, you probably played a lot of Turtles video games. A lot of stuff from this trailer, from the flying platforms to Krang swinging a mace, comes straight from the vast number of Ninja Turtles games we’ve seen over the years. If Super Krang there starts firing missiles out of his chest and spewing explosives that fall randomly on the ground, it might open a portal to the early ’90s.
Also, as somebody who grew up watching the silly cartoon, Rocksteady being a total idiot with his tank is still pretty funny. Who gives an anthropomorphic rhino an LMG in the first place? Why not give guns to your squad of ninjas instead?
If you’re wondering why we see Krang but don’t hear his distinctive voice, it’s because there’s been a switch. Originally the talking brain alien was going to be voiced by Fred Armisen, but, uh, apparently nobody bothered to get Armisen to sign a contract, and he had to back out due to scheduling issues. In his place will be Brad Garrett, best known from Everybody Loves Raymond. We’ll see just how that changes things June 3.
