19th Century Wine, The Science Of Taste, And An Epic Rap Battle — This Week in Food Videos

There’s a lot going on in the food world. Things move quickly. Something is hot, then it’s gone completely. It seems almost impossible to keep up with the conversation — farms, GMOs, burgers, viral ice cream — there’s just so much food content to keep you sated. We’d like to help you stay on top of things, so we’ve put together a few of our favorite food videos from the week that was:

LONGER LASTING BANANAS

Science has done it again! It looks like the key to a longer lasting banana is in its genetics. Great, now I have to wait twice as long to make banana bread.

WINE STASH DISCOVERED IN CZECH REPUBLIC

This one’s got buried treasure and Nazis. Now if there was just some biblical magic involved, we’d have an Indiana Jones movie.

WHOLE FOODS CHASES THE MILLENNIAL MARKET

Whole Foods opened its first in a chain of 365 grocery stores in Silver Lake this week. The mid-range supermarket aims to compete with the likes of Trader Joe’s and Kroger’s Main & Vine. And, you know, sell the average consumer food they can actually afford.

THE SCIENCE OF TASTE

Gathering scientists together to figure out how we taste food is always fun. We seem to think whatever we put in our mouth is the taste. In reality our sight, touch, smell and tongue all combine to create a taste in our brain. So I suppose if McDonald’s looked better it would taste better.

DO YOU HAVE A SWEET TOOTH?

The scientists over at Eater are examining where a person’s preference and dislike for sweets originates. I’m not a sweet-tooth. I never order deserts and rarely eat chocolate or candy. But I hear some people like that stuff.

A RESTAURANT THAT CATERS SOLELY TO YOUR INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT!

We’ve all seen, and liked, all the food porn on Instagram. Thankfully, now there is a restaurant just for you to take photos of food! Just don’t actually eat the food. You might die.

GORDO vs. CHILD — EPIC RAP BATTLE

Here’s a palette cleanser of actors with silly accents battling it out over culinary tradition from the minds over at ERB. Gordo gets in a few good ones. I mean, no one wants to cook calf’s brains. And, ‘YES! CHEF!’ is a pretty dope chorus. I gotta give the edge to Julia Child here for, “Now eat a dick, Bon Appétit!”

THE SCiO IS ABOUT TO CHANGE EVERYTHING

Some science-y inventor types in Israel have taken a clunky old spectrograph and shrunk it to the size of a microchip. Now we can easily see the quality and nutritional value of almost everything imaginable via an app on our smartphones. This is going to be huge in the drug trade…no more baby powder in my cocaine!

THE FOOD ORACLE

Here’s our weekly trailer for a film coming to a theater, or streaming device, near you. This week we have The Food Oracle. It’s a food porn exploration of some of the best and most innovative restaurants in Europe, and a portrait of the crazy people behind the food.

FOOD LESSON OF THE WEEK

Here’s a handy video from Jamie Oliver to help you peel garlic more easily. Don’t cut yourself.

BLACK MARKET FISH

CNN reported on an emerging black market for Totoaba bladders — a fish indigenous to the Gulf of California and critically endangered. Evidently, consumption of the bladders will “make you more beautiful.” The cost is only $100,000. Right… You know, before I drop 100 grand on a fish bladder, I’d want a more scientific opinion than some sketchy dude at a night market. But that’s just me.

RAMEN FACTORY

Let’s end the week on the mesmerizing process of fresh ramen noodles making their way from the factory to your bowl of broth.

Have a happy food weekend! Eat often! At least three times a day!
