For most little kids and their parents, Halloween is a fun time to get creative, eat too much candy, and gawk at all the tiny Princess Leias traipsing through their neighborhood. But for some new parents, Halloween is another milestone missed as they eagerly wait to bring their newborn baby home from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It’s an extremely emotional and stressful time for parents, which is why volunteers with March of Dimes and Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri did their best to provide a little relief and a sense of normalcy to families at the hospital this year.
March of Dimes volunteers and Saint Luke’s NICU nurses created costumes for several babies in the hospital that prove there’s nothing more inspirationally adorable than the world’s tiniest super heroes.
The idea to create costumes for NICU babies at Saint Luke’s came from the hospital’s NICU Family Support Program. In addition to costumes for the babies, volunteers also gave families a “Trick or Treat, smell my feet,” card with the baby’s footprints — which is obviously the cutest thing imaginable — along with a hand crocheted pumpkin filled with treats, and a Halloween book for families to read together. As an extra amazing bonus, the crocheted pumpkins were all made by one staff member at the hospital, and the photos were all taken by moms of former NICU babies.
About 35 babies received this special Halloween thanks to March of Dimes and Saint Luke’s Hospital.
