It’s that time of year again! Time to see which cities are the least fit based on the American College of Sports Medicine’s American Fitness Index. Every year the organization compares factors such as walkability, school physical education requirements, recreational facilities, obesity, diabetes and smoking rates. The result is a 50-city list of slow, steady improvement.
For the number one fittest MSA (metropolitan statistical area) Washington DC, 80 percent of people claimed that they exercised in the last 30 days. This is a pretty impressive feat but keep in mind that it is DC after all, a city full of politicians. And politicians love to lie, just ask Lyin’ Ted!
The report proudly states that 60 percent of the MSAs improved their fitness ranking compared to last year, but the United States is still one of the most overweight countries in the world. Things are looking pretty grim in the midwest, specifically. Indianapolis came in last for the second year in a row and the report revealed that almost a third of those surveyed were obese.
Some survey results were promising: About 12% of Americans reported exercising in the last 30 days (Oh boy, that’s an improvement?), the number of smokers dropped about five percent, and diabetes death rates dropped around seven percent. Like we said, progress is slow and steady.
