After Ronda Rousey’s shocking and brutal loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 back in November, she disappeared for a while. It was Rousey’s first career loss and the biggest upset in UFC history, and it quickly became clear that she took it very hard.
However, it wasn’t until this week that we found out how dark of a place the 29-year-old fighter descended to. In her first sit-down interview since the loss, Rousey revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that she contemplated suicide after the fight.
“I was literally sitting there and thinking about killing myself and that exact second I’m like, ‘I’m nothing, what do I do anymore and no one gives a sh*t about me anymore without this.’
“To be honest, I looked up and I saw my man Travis was standing up there and I looked up at him and I was like, ‘I need to have his babies. I need to stay alive.'”
Sometimes it’s difficult to know just how much athletes struggle coming to grips with big losses, but luckily Rousey seems to have bounced back and is doing quite well for herself these days. Since the turn of the new year, she has hosted Saturday Night Live and been named a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model, continuing to build her impressive resumé away from the Octagon.
She has also already begun training for her eventual rematch with Holm, which is expected to take place later this year.
