I was supposed to see Ryan Gosling speak with Guillermo del Toro during SXSW on Friday afternoon, but I gave away my ticket to my wife, making me the Baby Goose of not-seeing-Ryan-Gosling husbands. Except for the fact that I’m not as handsome or talented as Gosling, who was in Austin to talk about his directorial debut, Lost River, which received a better response in the Texas capitol than it did at Cannes. Because if there’s one thing the Lone Star State is famous for, it’s tolerance. Anyway, during the event with the Pacific Rim director, a woman in the audience asked Gosling about how females are represented in film. According to Vanity Fair, del Toro joked, “And don’t say, ‘Hey, girl,'” to which Gosling responded, “I never said that! I understand if you’re in a movie and you say, ‘I’ll be back.’ You have to own it, but I never said it.”
Del Toro eventually tricked him into hey girl-ing, though, and after “jokingly dropping the mic,” Gosling answered the fan, “I think there’s a change happening… We’ve got these girls from Broad City who are incredible. Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, and Melissa McCarthy… there’s a tide change.”
Hey, girl(s). It’s your time. Hey, everyone. Here are some Baby Goose photos:
