It was recently reported that Hasbro is looking to expand the Transformers film series into an even larger cinematic universe, ala Marvel. With that announcement, comes higher expectations — explosions and robot fights aside — regarding the franchise’s next installment.
The rumor originally had Transformers 5 hitting theaters in 2016, according to Transformers World, Hasbro’s CEO Brian Goldner announced some more realistic plans during their Quarter 1 Investors call:
Our plan with the studio and filmmakers you may have heard some writers being hired and we have in fact brought in Akiva Goldsman to lead a group of writers to really create a strategic plan around Transformers. We think there are any number of stories to be told from the brand that has been around for 30 years with amazing canon and mythology. We would expect the sequel to the Transformers movie [TF4] to happen in 2017.
If Transformers 5 was to be released next year, the film would already have made an official announcement regarding its writer, director, and official release date by now. And while the updated year makes sense, the release dates for June and July of 2017 are quickly filling up with the likes of Toy Story 4, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Despicable Me 3 and one of the DC films. So if an announcement is to be made, it’d be wise for Paramount to make it sooner than later.
