Since it hit theaters six years ago, James Cameron’s Avatar has inspired a theme-park attraction and has left the director with four scripts to work with in continuing the pending film series. Now, in a further attempt to make his next three (or is it four?) Avatar movies have a more lasting impact on audiences, the director has teamed up with 20th Century Fox and Hewlett-Packard for a five-year deal to create an “immersive digital experience” to accompany each sequel:
“With ‘Avatar,’ we created a world that people want to immerse themselves in,” said Lightstorm president Jon Landau, who’s also an “Avatar” producer. “A powerful — and crucial — way for us to provide fans the ability to continue to do that is through an immersive digital experience. Through our partnership with HP, we will create an entirely new paradigm for how you expand and grow a story world.”
HP will provide four distinct services that will hold this digital experience together: cloud management, online security, data capture and personalization. So far, all we know is fans will be able to explore the world of Pandora themselves. How, though? Maybe an open world online game of some sorts. Just speculating here…
The next three Avatar movies are currently scheduled to be released in December 2017, 2018 and 2019. The original may still be the highest-grossing movie of all time, but with competition from Marvel and the like, it looks like James Cameron is doing his best to make sure these sequels will keep him at the top spot:
“This digital experience will connect all aspects of the ‘Avatar’ franchise to make it easy for our fans around the globe to really engage with our world and its themes and, if they want, become part of the story,” Landau said.
Become a part of the story? Well now you’ve got me intrigued.
