Tom Cruise and Scientology are usually tighter than a drum when it comes to their relationship. If you saw Going Clear when it aired on HBO, you know that Cruise is the golden child for the church’s leadership and plays a pivotal role in its public image. If you didn’t see the documentary, you know this because of that lovely leaked video featuring Cruise having a nice chat about the religion.

Well, that relationship might be on the rocks, according to a new report citing Star magazine. That means it’s time to put on your gossip hats and decode if Tom Cruise is finally ready to ditch the church for the simplest of reasons, his kid:

An insider explained to Star magazine how Tom’s recent phone call with Suri made him realize he needed to get out. “She was going on and on about her ballet class and how much she loves it. That’s when Tom realized he’s never seen her perform ballet and he started to tear up,” the insider claimed. “It hit him that she’s growing up before his eyes and he’s not there to witness most of it. They talk on the phone and video chat, but it’s not the same.” Phone calls and video chats for Tom and Suri can’t really replace spending actual, physical time with each other, especially since Suri is so young.

The source went on to explain the predicament Tom is allegedly in. “Tom has been under tremendous pressure where Suri and Katie are concerned because the church doesn’t want him close to them. They can’t stand that their own poster boy isn’t raising his child in the church,” the source said. “If they label Suri a suppressive person (a Scientology term for an enemy of the church), as they’ve been known to do with dissenters, that would make it hard for Tom to have a relationship with her. He’s between a rock and a hard place, but he’s finally making a choice to put his daughter first,” the source continued.

There’s good reason to think this has some truth to it, but, considering the presence of unnamed sources, it’s hard to be certain. It’s like the Not Me Ghost from Family Circus, just popping in to whisper gossip and then jetting off to knock over a tray of cookies. But given the scrutiny from the public after the documentary and what information is floating out there for all eyes to see, it isn’t out of the question.

Losing Cruise would be a big hit to the Church of Scientology, but it isn’t like it’d be the death knell. I just hope it doesn’t devolve into some ugly sort of feud, publicly airing out a bunch of dirty laundry on both sides to the point that no PR person in the world could save it. That’d be horrible. Almost as horrible as having 40 alien ghosts gnawing on your spine.
