After the release of hugely successful cogs in the Marvel Machine with The Avengers, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Joss Whedon faced a nearly impossible task of outdoing them all with Avengers: Age of Ultron. While it was certainly a fine outing, fans couldn’t help but be a little disappointed in Ultron‘s execution. It somehow felt like too much and not enough at the same time. As the Marvel universe continues to expand, maybe there was just too much to set up in one film.
Well, the guys over at Screen Junkies took fans to task in the latest Honest Trailer, proclaiming that Whedon, who gave us nerds so much to be thankful for, was crushed under the weight of fan expectations and Marvel’s management. Instead of being grateful for all the good work that he’s done, fans drove him off of Twitter and into a hiatus. Whedon is one of the most in-demand directors these days, and yet he has nothing in production right now. This film broke him, and that is a loss to both Marvel and film in general. Here’s hoping that, after a break, Whedon will be back in action with a new project soon enough.
I, for one, feel thoroughly chastened. Joss, how about you pop over for some tea and I’ll tell you why Buffy is so awesome. Deal?
