The first seven Fast & Furious movies were set in Los Angeles, Miami, Tokyo, Panama, Brazil, London, and Los Angeles again (with a brief detour to Abu Dhabi), so the next logical step for Furious 8 is to take America’s favorite crew of street racing criminals turned high-level government operatives to one of three locations: New York, Las Vegas, or god dang outer space. Anything else would be a let down at this point. Bright lights or spaceships. Gotta happen.
And happen it will. During an appearance on The Tonight Show, series star and mastermind Vin Diesel revealed that the next film — which will be helmed by Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray — will take place in New York City. The Big Apple. The City That Never Sleeps. The Grimy Cucumber. (That’s one, right?) “But something something the traffic!,” you say. “And the cabs!” Hush up, you. Let Vin think.
As fans of the series may know, the New York setting actually takes the franchise back to its roots, in a way. The original film, from way back in 2001 (and consider this your periodic reminder that Fast & Furious movies have been in our lives for 15 years), was based on a 1998 Vibe Magazine article about Manhattan street racers. So, fine, there’s some history there, in addition to the continued stakes-raising they’ve undergone with each film. But so help me God, this series will end up in space one day. Racing neon dune buggies across the surface of the moon and whatnot. Maybe Fast & Furious 10.
