It’s nice to have our Baby Goose back. After seemingly starring in every movie released between 2011 and 2013, Ryan Gosling had a quiet 2014 and 2015. He directed and wrote the much-maligned Lost River, and that was it until Adam McKay’s far-better-received The Big Short, which comes out next week.
Gosling’s next role is in Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, where he plays a bumbling private investigator who gets his face punched and arm broken by Russell Crowe. To recap: That’s Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, as well as Kim Basinger, Matt Bomer, Keith David, and Jill from The Leftovers, in a comedy-thriller set in the facial hair-heavy 1970s written by the guy who gave us Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon, and the best Iron Man film. I’d write “yessssssssssssssssssss,” but there aren’t enough s’s in the world.
Black told People that “whether this thing is a comedy with action or a thriller with jokes, one thing that’s very clear is [Gosling and Crowe] are extremely funny. People will enjoy seeing the two of them.” He even compared the duo to Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in the Lethal Weapon franchise. And just like Lethal Weapon, The Nice Guys is “a little fast, a little funny, and a little rough in places, kind of coarse.” Again, yessssssssssssssssssss.
Watch the trailer above, and be forever fateful that Crowe has fully embraced his punch first, ask questions never South Park caricature.
