Adam Driver is a pretty cool guy. He likely started out as “that guy never wears a shirt in that show I hate” thanks to his role on Girls, but now he’s poised to be in Star Wars and he’s made quite a name for himself. Apart from that, he is also a vet. Not only did he use his acting to work through his transition into a post-service life, but he’s also trying to give back to those still in the military via some work on the stage.
That’s where this Vice News segment comes in, following Driver and some other actors like Joanne Tucker, Natasha Lyonne, and Peter Scolari as they travel to the Middle East and attempt to bring some entertainment to soldiers:
Driver, who’s a former Marine, founded Arts in the Armed Forces, which is a non-profit that brings contemporary theater to those in the U.S. Military and aims to strengthen the relationship between military personnel and the theater community.
After returning home from his military duty, Driver resorted to acting as a coping mechanism and as a way to connect with others.
“Putting words to feelings for the first time, I was making the human connection of being in the military through theater. And in doing so I felt less alone,” he says in the video.
Driver’s non-profit is trying to expand the entertainment opportunities on base, which currently boasts “country-western cover bands or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders” according to the Star Wars actor.
The real highlight during this visit comes when one of the soldiers asks Driver to spill the secret about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Having been sworn to secrecy, he can’t give out too much. He is able to tell the group one simple fact he knows about the film:
