Now that we know the Prometheus sequel will be called Alien: Covenant, opens October 6, 2017, and stars Michael Fassbender and Katherine Waterston (but no Noomi Rapace?), more details are slowly emerging. Director Ridley Scott just arrived in Sydney, Australia, to start production on this Star Wars-inspired Prometheus trilogy or quadrilogy. But the night before he jetted off to Australia, he was winning a Golden Globe for The Martian. You know, just a regular weekend.
After winning the Golden Globe, Scott gave a backstage Q&A with the foreign press. About two and a half minutes into the Golden Globe Awards backstage interview, he revealed he wants Alien: Covenant to have “a pretty hard R” rating and explained his nostalgic reasoning for pushing it that far.
“I always remember walking down the edge in Saint Louis when we were previewing [Alien]. I couldn’t sit through the film one more time. I walked down the edge into the kitchen scene when John Hurt started to bring up his breakfast. That moment, I realized how pretty scary the film was… I felt a sense of responsibility that I had gone too far because it was extreme. I’m going to try and do that again this year, but much worse.” (transcribed by Coming Soon)
The only film in the Alien series without an R rating is the “whoever wins, we lose” crossover, Alien vs. Predator (truly, we did lose). So, we expected this prequel to be rated R, but we’re happy to hear Scott’s going back to the first movie and pushing things a bit further than even he’s totally comfortable with. We wouldn’t want our Alien movie any other way, and this news is a definite “David smelling the flowers” on our scale of contentment.
