It wasn’t long ago that Amy Schumer wrote a lengthy (for Twitter) post on telling racial and offensive jokes in comedy, throwing out the line “I am not racist” for the world to take note. Now, she’s apologizing for a racist joke in another less-wordy Tweet.

The joke in question can be seen below and it prompted user Martine Joelle to reach out to Schumer on the social platform for a little insight into her choice of humor:

It makes sense considering her previous stance and her increased visibility due to Inside Amy Schumer and Trainwreck. That’s when Schumer dropped the following, attempting to explain the joke’s origins and apologizing for any offense it caused:

Thank you so much for asking. I wrote this joke 2 years ago. I used to do a lot of short dumb jokes like this. I played a dumb white girl character on stage. I still do sometimes. Once I realized I had more eyes and ears on me and had an influence I stopped telling jokes like that on stage. I am evolving as any artist. I am taking responsibility and hope I haven’t hurt anyone. And I apologize I did. Thanks again for asking.

Not sure how I feel about apologizing for a joke, especially after the “I’m not going to tell safe material” bit from her last Twitter post. I do like that Schumer owns up to the joke being offensive, though, and offers a look into why it exists as opposed to just saying sorry. It’s just odd timing.
