Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the most analyzed movie of all time, and it’s not even out yet. Critics saw it last night, though, including our own Mike Ryan, who called it a “direct sequel to the original trilogy” that “does not take itself too seriously… and this is a good thing.” Yet, despite fans (and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) making a big deal out of the smallest details, one aspect of Episode VII has been left undiscovered: The voice of BB-8. Until now.
HitFix’s Drew McWeeny wisely stayed through the credits during his screening, and noticed something no one else has. The role of “BB-8 Vocal Consultant” is attributed to SNL dynamo Bill Hader. He’s really good at impressions. McWeeny reached out to the Trainwreck star, who said, “J.J. [Abrams] f*cking around with this sound effects app on his iPad that was attached to a talk box operated by me. It looked ridiculous, but it made BB-8’s voice. At first, I tried doing a voice, but we all agreed it sounded too human.”
Another scene-stealer also shared the role with Hader.
Ben Schwartz, known to many [as] Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Recreation, was also credited as a “BB-8 Vocal Consultant,” so I guess they both contributed to the final version of what we hear onscreen.
Ben Wyatt is freaking out right now.
