Doctor Strange arrives in six weeks, and that means the hype incantations are being chanted by interns as we speak. That also means we get more footage and closer looks at how the movie comes together. And it looks like the Sorcerer Supreme will have some interesting challenges in his movie.
That said, this doesn’t appear, so far, to be pushing any boundaries plot-wise. As comics fans know, Stephen Strange is an arrogant, brilliant surgeon who, after wrecking his supercar, spends all his money trying to fix the nerve damage in his hands, because healing people with your extensive training and knowledge just isn’t satisfying unless you can cut them open. Broke, he goes to Nepal chasing a cure and instead is trained to become the world’s best chance against monsters from beyond the void, and also Mads Mikkelsen.
The finished effects and sprinklings of new footage, though, look pretty neat, and watching Strange weave mandalas and twist the fabric of reality is pretty cool. It’s not quite watching him fight supervillains with alliteration and doggerel, but we think that’s an acceptable break from the comics, considering that saying “By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth!” makes you sound less like the Sorcerer Supreme and more like somebody who has strong opinions about Fourth Edition D&D. And maybe Strange does have an opinion about it, but we’ll have to wait until November 4th to find out.
