Emilia Clarke is known around the world as the Game of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and of the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, and the Breaker of Chains. That’s a lot of titles, but it’s a memorable role and one that may end up typecasting her as a blonde haired Targaryen conqueror.
Emilia is doing the best she can to avoid that, shedding the blonde wig she wears to Westerosi work and going with her natural brown hair for the movie adaptation of the Jojo Moyes bestseller Me Before You. One of the thing that drew her to Me Before You: despite it being a romance movie, there is hard, sad edge to it as well that she feels is left out of too much modern romance.
That’s her issue with Disney movies like last year’s live action Cinderella, which featured her Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden (Robb Stark) as the Prince: they don’t capture the complexities of life and how they can complicate love.
“Disney screws us over,” she told the LA Times in a recent interview. “We’ve been brought up with these fairy stories and Disney being, like, ‘happily ever after,’ so we look for that magic when we’re adults. We look for it in yoga or, ‘If I hold this crystal, it’s going to make me feel better.’ We do that even in this modern day and age, where Netflix and chill is the only choice.”
It turns out that Emilia is a fan of keeping things casual, but obviously can’t just hop onto the same dating sites as everyone else. Or at least she thinks she can’t … we don’t see anything wrong with her theoretical proposal below.
“I can’t get on no Internet [dating] site! I’m not going to be, like, ‘Daenerys is ready! Swipe right, people!’” she told the LA Times’ Amy Kaufman before launching into her philosophy on dating. “Everything that I’m doing right now is because I feel like doing it. It’s pretty dope. I think that when you sit there waiting for someone or something, you’ll wake up and be, like, ‘Oh, I didn’t live a life’. If you just get out there and say yes to stuff, then even if you don’t get a boyfriend, you’ll get a friend or a great meal. Or bankloads of beards for your brain.”
“Daenerys is ready! Swipe right, people!” sounds like a pretty damn good tagline for a Tinder profile, guaranteed to catch fire for Emilia Clarke or anyone rocking the popular Daenerys locks this summer. I suppose the Mother of Dragons doesn’t really need Tinder and a cheesy tagline to pick up men. She can just quote Game of Thrones to anyone in real life — the “bankloads of beards” was in reference to the hipster-filled juice bar she frequents where the interview was taking place.
It must be like shooting fish in a barrel … or goats in a pen when you’re a dragon. But if she still wants a cheesy taglines, May we suggest that line she used on Daario? Fifteen minutes into Netflix and chill and she goes…
