Kate McKinnon Owes A Debt Of ‘Ghostbusters’ Gratitude To Tilda Swinton

No actor or actress this year has elevated a movie from “fine, I guess” to “you really need to see it” more than Kate McKinnon in Ghostbusters. As Dr. Jillian Holtzmann, she’s a comedy dynamo, an eccentric bundle of weird energy who’s just about the only thing everyone who saw the film can agree on.

So it’s not surprising that part of McKinnon’s look was based on another out-there personality, Tilda Swinton. When the New York Times asked McKinnon who devised her wardrobe and hairstyle, she responded, “The costume designer, Jeffrey Kurland, had gotten all these wacky things, and when I saw them initially, I thought, this is way too cool. I wanted to be the plainest of the plain.” McKinnon continued, “But then I rationalized it by saying that, to her, it’s not even cool. She just has these objects and throws them on. The hair was a collaboration between me and Brenda McNally, my hairstylist. I was like, what hair would a person who doesn’t care about an exploding nuclear reactor have? Probably Tilda Swinton’s hair.” She’s not wrong.

My dream journal is nothing but the words “Tilda Swinton Kate McKinnon Thelma and Louise remake” written over and over again. Also, there’s this:

Have you ever met Justice Ginsburg?

No, ay yi yi. What I wouldn’t do. I’d crawl in that robe and never leave. (Via the New York Times)

Ay yi yi.” Stay great, Kate.
