Gaspar Noe’s Love became the talk of Cannes this year before anyone had even seen it, thanks to its much-discussed graphic content, which Noe shot in 3-D, no less. There’s none of that in this exclusive clip from the film, but it’s still instantly identifiable as a Noe film; the long takes, the references to 2001: A Space Odyssey, the vague sense of dread.

This is only the French director’s fourth feature, but he has a way of attracting attention — and controversy — with each new effort. The torturous rape scene in 2002’s Irreversible helped make it one of the ’00s most-divisive films. But there’s no denying Noe’s skill behind the camera. Enter the Void, released in 2009, is an instantly distinctive film from the credits on. Noe’s shocks aren’t there just to shock, but they’re hardly the whole story of his films. Hence, it’s fair to expect the sex and 3D to be integral to Love, but hardly the only reason to show up, especially because it’s apparently one of Noe’s most personal efforts. The story of a filmmaker with fidelity issues, Love is reportedly a semi-autobiographical effort. It premieres in New York and L.A. this Friday before expanding in the forthcoming weeks.
