Legendary director Mike Nichols has died at age 83. The sad news was announced in a statement by ABC New President James Goldston:
“He was a true visionary, winning the highest honors in the arts for his work as a director, writer, producer and comic and was one of a tiny few to win the EGOT-an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony in his lifetime,” Goldston said in the statement.
The scope of Nichols’s influence on the entertainment world cannot be overstated or easily summarized. His status as an EGOT-holder speaks to his versatility, but he undoubtedly made his mark directing influential films including The Graduate (for which he won the Oscar for best director), Catch-22, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; as well as Broadway productions of The Odd Couple and Death of a Salesman, for which he won his eighth Tony two years ago.
He is survived by his wife, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, three children, and four grandchildren.
