The Oscars can get pretty boring. What do you expect from such a heavily, severely scripted program that lasts upwards of three hours?
That’s why when someone or something goes off script, it livens up the proceedings in a major way.
The list of “shocking moments” in Oscar history isn’t too too long but it sure is fun. From the streaker who interrupted David Niven’s segment and was subsequently mocked by the English star for his “shortcomings” in 1974, to John Travolta and his hairpiece inexplicably referring to singer/actress Idina Menzel as Adele Dazeem a couple of years ago, we can look back on some of those unscripted Oscar moments and laugh.
Then there’s the case of Jack Palance, who took home Best Supporting Actor in 1991 for City Slickers. Palance, age 73 when he won, still felt like he might have something to prove to the Academy even after receiving his statue, so he dropped and gave ’em some one-arm pushups. Right there on the stage.
And of course, who could forget South Park co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who hit the red carpet thanks to a nomination for the song “Blame Canada” from their South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut. Dressed in drag, with Parker doing a little JLo cosplay in her famous, green, floral Grammys dress, the two later admitted they might have been feeling, well, a little trippy at that year’s ceremony.
There are more moments in Oscar history that brought the house down beyond just these examples. Take a look at the video above and check them out.
