In a preview of her interview for Off Camera with Sam Jones, Olivia Wilde has some charming anecdotes about how method the Drinking Buddies set was. That’s right. That was real beer that the actors were sipping and chugging while inhabiting their borderline alcoholic characters.
“I should give credit to the beer. We were hammered the entire movie,” Wilde says in the above video. “It was real beer, because beer on that set was cheaper than water, because we were shooting at a brewery.”
Wilde also recalls Anna Kendrick not realizing this, when she showed up on set and shot her first scene. “She’s about this big, and she sat down to do the first scene, and took a huge gulp of beer, not realizing that it was real, and was like instantly hammered [laughs].”
Kendrick’s reaction sounds pretty funny. “She was like, ‘What’s happening? What are you guys doing?’ And we’re like, ‘Oh, we forgot to tell you, the beer’s all real, everyone’s drunk, it’s 10 a.m. Welcome to Drinking Buddies.”
I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a fun set to be on, with the added bonus that the drunkenness probably lended itself well to the final product.
