The American version of Godzilla was more admirable than likable, but one thing that stood out was its painterly eye towards scenes of utter destruction. For Toho’s return to kaiju movies, it looks like they’re taking a few cues from the American version, but adding a few twists of their own.
The trailer is completely without dialogue, and is mostly centered on showing Godzilla as a force of nature with vast, sweeping shots of Godzilla stomping across Japan and night-time images of him wreathed in the embers of a city he’s destroyed. The Japanese self-defense forces aren’t screwing around, either: We see them aim directly at the head, obscuring Godzilla’s face in explosions and fire. Not that it helps, of course, but it emphasizes just how tough this go-round with the big G is going to be.
We also get to see the new, unnerving Godzilla suit in action and boy is he gross. One question that isn’t answered is why Godzilla is covered with all these raw radiation burns and why he’s destroying Japan this time, but there do seem to be, in the classic Godzilla tradition, a lot of meetings and intense conversations about it. We’ll find out more next weekf when the movie debuts in Japan.
