Did You Notice How David Ayer Set Up ‘Suicide Squad’ For A Sequel?

Suicide Squad spoilers ahead.

David Ayer has some plot ideas for a Suicide Squad sequel, which is good, since the first one didn’t seem to have a plot. (Okay, that’s not fair. I dunno… Ghostbusters? is still a plot.) Last week, we wrote about an interview in which Ayer talked about how many scenes were cut from the movie (which at least one butthurt weirdo is purportedly suing over) and how it’s his own cut in theaters, despite rumors about behind-the-scenes drama. Now Collider has released the full, very long interview from which that news was culled.

In the interview, Ayer discusses spoilers from the movie, including the mid-credits scene with Waller (Viola Davis) and Batman (Ben Affleck), which ends with Joker (Jared Leto, ACTOR) busting Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) out of Belle Reve prison. Ayer told Collider that scene was shot in the first week of filming, and he explained why he chose to end the story there:

“I don’t want to give stuff away but it’s that anything is possible, and that’s the thing, for as much control and commend Amanda Waller has over these guys, at the end of the day they’re supervillains and they’re gonna do supervillain stuff. Plus, the Joker/Harley relationship just seemed like the right button for the movie, it opens so many doors if another one of these were ever to turn up under a rock somewhere.”

In other words, if Ayer returns for that sequel we keep hearing about — which might be rated R, especially if Jared Leto gets his way, and for which Margot Robbie is definitely down — expect the sequel to involve Joker and Harley Quinn being on the loose, possibly as the problem the Squad has to solve next.

As for whether Ayer has actually written anything to that end, he joked, “There may be a cocktail napkin with some scribbles on it somewhere.” Oh man, I bet all the letter S‘s in those scribbles are the weird jagged kind we all learned how to draw in middle school. It’s the most twisted kind of S.
