One of this awards season’s darkest horses received his due at this year’s Golden Globes ceremony when Sylvester Stallone snagged the Best Supporting Actor prize. The star has been drumming up quite a bit of enthusiasm for his reprisal of unstoppable boxer Rocky Balboa for Creed, and that comeback-story narrative propelled him to a victory this evening. Stallone’s somewhat surprising win (the odds-on favorite was probably Mark Rylance for his turn in Bridge of Spies) resonated in a big way with the assembled stars, who leapt to their feet for a standing ovation commemorating the 69-year-old actor. As Stallone made his way to the stage, visibly overcome with emotion and brimming with gratitude, the iconic Rocky theme boomed behind him.
Stallone’s speech began with the sort of weighty declaration that only elder statesmen actors can really make, when he confessed that he’s the sum total of everyone he’s ever met and accepts this on their behalf. The rest of the speech went rather routinely, with Stallone thanking his loved ones and collaborators. To the folks watching at home, however, a pair of names were conspicuously absent; Stallone apparently neglected to mention director Ryan Coogler or his co-star Michael B. Jordan. However, reports from the scene on Twitter indicate that Stallone retook the stage after the walk-off music had begun playing to cite Coogler, humbly claiming, “You did it all, I just hung on for dear life.”
