Chloë Grace Moretz is trading in her Hit-Girl duds and getting in on the YA novel-based movie craze with The 5th Wave. Based on the book by Rick Yancey, The 5th Wave is basically every apocalyptic trope rolled into a ball along with the usual teenage romance. I’m not sure which is scarier.
Instead of attacking with the standard spaceships and lasers, the evil aliens of The 5th Wave inflict a series of disasters on the planet. The first wave is the shut down of all technology, second is natural disasters, third is a plague, fourth is Invasion of the Body Snatchers-esque infiltration, and the titular fifth wave is an all-out invasion. What, no zombies? Here’s Columbia’s synopsis of the film…
“In the new film The 5th Wave, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Cassie (Chloë Grace Moretz) is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother.”
The 5th Wave is being written by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich, Charlotte’s Web), directed by J. Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed), and hits theaters January 2016. Mmmm, right in the midst of Hollywood’s annual movie dumping season, but hey, I’m sure The 5th Wave will be great. Totally.
