Spoiler Warning: If this theory is right, it could be considered a spoiler.
Today has been a beautiful day of joyous unity for Star Wars fans everywhere thanks to the release of the second Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer and the first glimpse of some old and familiar friends. Basically, we’re all Han Drunk with a wide grin on our faces as we reflect upon what the franchise — warts and all — meant to our childhood and what the future will bring. It’s been great, but as the dust has settled, there has been an awakening of curiosity and a question: besides Han, the hand of Luke, a new John Boyega look of exasperation, and some kick-ass action shots, what did the trailer really show us? What’s the meaning of it all?
By now, you’ve probably read Dan’s shot-by-shot review of the trailer and Mike’s informed look at the spoilers therein, but now it’s time for the crackpot theories. Well, one specific crackpot theory: I don’t think that’s Luke’s voice doing the narration, as others have guessed.
Here are the relevant excerpts.
Return of the Jedi
The Force Awakens
Yes, that is Luke’s speech, but it goes a step further with the Force Awakens narrator taking “You have that power too.” and adding it to the end. But it doesn’t sound exactly like the same audio. Is it possible that it’s simply Mark Hamill’s voice younged up by digital wizardry for some reason? Of course it’s possible, and it does sound like Mark Hamill, but it also sounds a lot like Irish actor and cast member Domhnall Gleeson. Specifically at the :52 mark when he says, “My sister has it.” There’s just a touch of the Irish there.
Now, if this is Gleeson — whose character has yet to be officially announced — then it would confirm the rumor that he’s playing Luke’s son (assuming, of course, that when he says “my father has it” that he’s talking about Luke) while also confirming that Luke has a daughter as well. And if that’s the case, who is she? There have been a lot of rumors saying that Daisy Ridley was Leia and Han’s daughter, but what if her character, Rey, is Luke’s kid?
Here’s another question: who is Gleeson’s character talking too? Obviously, it’s another Jedi, but is it a hero, a villain, or someone in-between? Is it a THIRD Skywalker kid? Did Luke go from virginal sister-kisser to Jedi Shawn Kemp, leaving bastard kids all over the galaxy?
There was the rumor that Kylo Ren — a villainous character that most think will be played by Adam Driver — could be Luke’s son, but it’s also theorized that he could be Leia and Han’s kid. Or there could be no connection to Kylo Ren and it could be a random Jedi that we don’t know about. Sh*t, maybe it’s Jar Jar. Surprise, fanpeoples! As is the case with all things relating to this movie, one answer (or guess at what an answer is) opens the door to a flood of questions. But that’s part of the fun, isn’t it?
Anyway, if you think I’m way off base, let us know. I’ve listened to both clips a ton and at times, I even reject my own theory. This thing’s an aural version of that freaking dress. Thanks J.J.!
