It’s been a few months since Star Wars: Battlefront hit PCs and consoles like a force push to the chest, but now that the shiny gorgeousness has faded, players are wondering what’s next for the shooter. The big knock against Battlefront was its relative lack of content compared to other shooters and that the characters and settings featured were strictly based around Episodes IV, V and VI. Of course, those are the most beloved chapters in the Star Wars canon, but with The Force Awakens in the limelight, and with the Star Wars universe being vast, some fans wanted to battle on the front with Episode VII characters, and in Episode VII places. Maybe not with “Old Han,” necessarily, but having a young Luke Skywalker face off against his nephew in Hero Battle sure would be fun. Well, that’s never going to happen.
Sadly, the extensive amount of DLC that’s been planned for Battlefront will strictly follow the original trilogy. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen explained why the characters, times and places can’t mix:
“On Star Wars, the one thing that we are adhering to, and I think this is part of our arrangement with Lucas and Disney, is you can’t make a game in Star Wars that violates the canon of Star Wars. Meaning you can’t take something from the future and bring it back into the past unless it’s a reference. Not knowing yet exactly what the storyline in Rogue One is going to be, I can’t comment on how that could come in. But to the extent that it’s in the future… Our current Battlefront game is all based on the historical Star Wars canon, which is 30 years before the most recent movie, that will limit our ability to bring some new content into that.”
That makes sense. If you don’t want first person shooter Star Wars Super Smash Bros. then that’s fine. And the EA and Dice DLC schedule looks fun, I’ll play it, but why not have a specific piece of DLC that won’t be violating the canon in any way? Stand-alone DLC is real, and people will buy it.
Just give us a taste of The Force Awakens in Battlefront, or maybe even a Battle of Naboo DLC. Please. Need Darth Maul versus prime Obi Wan in my life.
