The song: “Lemonade,” by Sophie

With summer in full swing, marketers are busy creating ads to ensure you have the most indulgent, fun-filled time ever. That, of course, includes bikini-clad women and frozen drinks. To help drive home that message, McDonald’s latest ad (for – what else? – lemonade) features delicious summery greenscreen vibes soundtracked by “Lemonade,” produced by the PC Music-affiliated Sophie.

Where you can find it: McDonald’s McCafe Frozen Lemonade ad will most likely air as often as possible, banking on the sticky summer months and Americans’ endless desire to quench their thirst. The track originally appeared as the A-side of Sophie’s 12″ “Lemonade,” which was released in July 2014 on Scottish imprint Numbers.

Where else have you heard Sophie? The London-based producer made a splash in 2013 with his first single, “Nothing More To Say / EEEHHH” garnering early praise from BBC Radio 1 DJs Pete Tong and Annie Mac and producers Skream and Jimmy Edgar. It was also named “Pitchfork’s Best New Track.”

In 2o14, Sophie’s music was also used by Paris fashion house Kenzo for its spring/summer ad.

What does Sophie sound like? The elusive producer’s sound has a shiny hard exterior, with a bubblegum feel to its inside. Think the hard industrial breaks of artists like Hudson Mohawke and Lunice, and the happy house overtones of acts like Theo Parrish and Todd Terje. It’s a universal dance vibe that you can’t help but be addicted to. Sophie’s music is angsty in a way that makes you want to know why you haven’t heard it before, and where you can get more of it.
