Has all the power bestowed upon him by the Internet gone to Dave Grohl‘s head? The living avatar of rock’s futile struggle against irrelevance has ridden the fact that he seems pretty nice to Crisp Rat/Jennifer Lawrence levels of adoration, but now he’s finally gone and said something a bit dickish. The Foo Fighters’ frontman mocked new bands that only play two-hour-long sets at a gig in Calgary.
Check out the video up top.
“You don’t want one of those little hour and a half long shows, do you? You don’t want that sh*t. All of those new bands that play those little two-hour concerts, you don’t want that sh*t. Two hours and 15, I don’t think is enough. Two and a half hours, does that sound okay? That’s not enough, is it? Here’s our f*cking problem. We’ve been a band for 20 f*cking years, we have a lot of f*cking songs, and then add my big mouth on top of that, and we’re going to be here all night.”
Of course, Grohl didn’t address the fact that new bands don’t have three hours worth of material to burn. Or the fact that plenty of acts as established as the Foos play long sets. Prince will play for hours after hitting the stage at 3 a.m. Garth Brooks plays two two-hour sets a night. I personally saw R. Kelly sing for an hour and a half without so much as a talking break between songs, and then improvise a song about the fact that he can sing for that long without stopping.
So, maybe cool it before you go slagging bands playing to rooms with 30 people in them for almost no money, Dave.
