Taylor Swift was interviewed by Vanity Fair for their September cover story, and it’s obvious that she values respect — and isn’t quick to forgive those who’ve crossed her.
Not surprisingly, Swift praises Apple in glowing terms for responding to her open letter with a change of heart, while blasting Spotify for not doing the same:
“Apple treated me like I was a voice of a creative community that they actually cared about,” she says. “And I found it really ironic that the multi-billion-dollar company reacted to criticism with humility, and the start-up [Spotify] with no cash flow reacted to criticism like a corporate machine.”
Similarly, Swift wouldn’t invite Kanye West into her inner circle until she felt a little respect:
“I feel like I wasn’t ready to be friends with [West] until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn’t ready to be friends with me until he had some sort of respect for me—so it was the same issue, and we both reached the same place at the same time.”
Looks like Katy Perry’s going about this in completely the wrong way. To get on Taylor’s good side, just give her what she wants: to be treated like an equal. Maybe she’ll even let you join her #squad and shower you with gifts. But hey, there’s plenty of room in the corner with Spotify.
