Josh Tillman has spent the last several years performing as the selfish/self-loathing lounge lizard Father John Misty, and the culmination of this persona has come in the song and video “The Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartment.”
The song is mean-spirited, listing all of the flaws of one of his sexual conquests, but as the track goes on, you realize that FJM is just as awful as the woman he’s roasting. This point that is driven home in the music video, which shows Tillman spending the night seducing himself.
In a press release, Tillman spoke on the inspiration for the video:
“This video is partially inspired by the LeBron James quote ‘It is precisely the superficial differences between people who are otherwise alike that inform the hostilities between them.’ Special thanks to my body double Tyler who I had to kiss no fewer than two dozen times and whose breath I can still smell in my mind’s eye.”
Director Drew Pearce also spoke about the video.
“It has been an honor to explore the palpable sexual chemistry that exists between Josh Tillman and himself. I hope this video does their enduring love affair justice.”
Father John Misty’s I Love You, Honeybear dropped earlier this year, but he already has the follow-up ready.
