Madonna may be one of the most controversial and provocative artists in modern music, but that doesn’t mean she lacks the ability to be somber and introspective when the moment calls for it. At a concert in Stockholm over the weekend, Madge gave an impassioned and emotional speech about the terror attacks that took place in Paris on Friday evening. Speaking from the heart, Madonna was honest with the crowd about her mixed feelings on performing so soon after such violence took place. As Entertainment Weekly reports, she passionately explained her thoughts:
“I need to take this moment to acknowledge the tragedy, the tragic killings, assassinations, and the senseless endings of precious life that occurred last night in Paris. It’s disturbed me all day, and it’s been really hard, actually, to get through the show because in many ways I feel torn. Like, why am I up here dancing and having fun when people are crying over the loss of their loved ones?”
The pop icon went on to say that going on with performing and dancing and singing is a direct way to show terrorists and other arbiters of violence that they have not won, that the human spirit prevails in the face of such horrors instead of giving up and throwing in the towel. She followed the speech with an acoustic version of “Like A Prayer” before continuing with the setlist as usual. Even in the face of incredible sadness and atrocities, Madonna finds a way to be a light in the darkness.
