It looks like Adele and Taylor Swift won’t be walking away from 2015 splitting every major title between them; little-known Canadian rapper Drake has managed to steal one from the dueling pop princesses, as Spotify announced that Drake is the streaming service’s most globally streamed artist for 2015. (Of course, the fact that Taylor Swift and Adele kept their albums off Spotify probably has something to do with that.)
Thanks in large part to the two albums he released this year, If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late and his collaboration with Future, What a Time to Be Alive, Drake was streamed 1.8 billion times. Ed Sheeran, 2014’s most streamed artist, as well as Spotify’s most streamed artist of all-time with 3 billion streams, came in second, followed by The Weeknd, Maroon 5 and Kanye West. Rihanna was the most streamed female artist, recording 1 billion streams.
Drake topped the U.S. streaming charts, as well; behind him are The Weeknd, West, Sheeran and Eminem. If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late was the second most streamed album in the States, trailing Beautify Behind the Madness by The Weeknd. Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen” was the most streamed song in the U.S. “Lean On” by Major Lazer was the most streamed song globally, notching 540 million streams (with at least a million of those streams coming on behalf of yours truly).
Of course, if Adele suddenly decides to let Spotify stream 25, this could all change. But for now, the streaming world is all Drake’s.
