We know Ab-Soul’s new project DWTW is done. TDE’s namesake president confirmed such weeks ago via Instagram and it’s been completed for a while now. What we don’t know is when exactly it will release but, thanks to the new track “Huey Knew,” we can start to get a sense of what will sound like. Let’s just say “promising” is the proper word for now, instead of creating a load of hype.
Fans of Soulo already know what to expect from him and there are no surprises here. Over Willie B’s production suitable for a murder mystery movie, Ab’s at his best here, turning witty phrases left and right and moving between delivering his usual hard-hitting punches (“Still in pursuit of happiness in the midst of the madness / With middle fingers to bitches with badges that go oink”) along with playful, braggadocios jabs (“I’m Robin Hood in Robin jeans, you follow me? / Never mind I’m tired of tight analogies”). Frequent rhyme companion Da$h comes through to tack on complimentary bars that are equally impressive to those who fancy lyricism. In the end, no one is actually harmed but the beat itself gets pummeled into submission.
Stream “Huey Knew” below before picking it up on iTunes. There’s more than enough packed in the song’s four minutes to hold down restless fans with a hunger to see what Soul and TDE have in store for his new project, whenever they decide it’s ready to be served*.
