Beyonce’s EGOT climb begins today. Queen Bey’s world-stopping HBO special/album premiere Lemonade netted four Emmy nominations including a director nom for Mrs. Knowles-Carter herself.
Lemonade was nominated for Outstanding Variety Special, Outstanding Production Design for a Variety, Nonfiction, Event or Award Special (Hannah Beachler, Production Designer, Chris Britt, Art Director, and Kim Murphy, Set Decorator) — Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special (for Bey and co-director Kahlil Joseph) and Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming.
In the director category, Lemonade is facing down fellow diva Adele’s Live in New York City special, this year’s Grammy Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors, Amy Schumer‘s Apollo special directed by Chris Rock and Grease: Live.
The spotlight on Beyonce has grown more intense in recent days — if such a thing is even possible — thanks to her outspokenness on recent issues of race and policing in America. While she made herself pretty clear in the “Formation” video, recent killings prompted a fiery essay from Bey as well as her participation in the heartbreaking #23Ways video.
Outside of Bey news, countless other Uproxx favorites snagged nominations. As expected, Game of Thrones and The People v O.J.: American Crime Story netted tons of nominations, and Mr. Robot finally managed to get some recognition. Check out the full list of nominees here.
