When you’re hosting the ninth incarnation of an enormous music festival, you need to do something different to keep it fresh. You want to bring in the big guns and really call attention to this wonderfully delightful lineup you’ve put together. Cue The Roots enlisting the gals from Broad City to announce the lineup for this year’s Roots Picnic, scheduled for June 4 in Philadelphia.
Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson don’t just list off some names, though. This isn’t amateur hour. They line out the whole day for you, complete with bathroom breaks, hydration pit stops, and when to stop by the box office and say what’s up to Jacobson’s friend Gene (after seeing Lolawolf, featuring Zoe Kravitz, who Glazer claims is the “sexiest woman alive”). And really quickly, as someone who has kicked it at a handful of Roots Picnics, I can’t stress the importance of hydrating enough. It’s somehow scorching hot at every one of these festivals. It’s a weather pattern oddity — can’t be explained!
The lineup for the festival is predictably awesome and uniquely culled and curated by The Roots themselves. In addition to performing their own set, because you know The Roots love to multi-task, the band will back up the headliner. This year, the honor goes to pop superstar Usher. The Picnic’s other two headliners are Future and Leon Bridges, along with Swizz Beatz, DMX, Anderson .Paak, Migos, Kehlani, and more rounding out the lineup.
