We’ll have much more on this most monumental of anniversaries on Monday, but today is the 20th anniversary of Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), one of the greatest debut/overall albums of all-time. (Yes, we know it’s your birthday, too, Midnight Marauders. We’ll celebrate by watching nothing but early episodes of The Wayans Bros.) And I can’t think of a better way to honor its impossible legacy than by letting Ol’ Dirty Bastard take the mic and be absolutely terrifying in his conviction, like he did in the clip below from 1993.
I’m from Brooklyn Zoo baby, right? I came from Staten Island, right? I had a fight with a n*gga, I was like nine years old, n*gga beat the sh*t out of me. Look, n*gga cracked my teeth. See what I am saying? I learned it ain’t where you’re from, n*gga, it’s where the F*CK you at…This sh*t is real, man. You got a whole bunch of black motherf*ckers right here, right now and y’all better know we came over here on a f*cking boat. I don’t give a f*ck if you’re Jamaican, Chinamen, y’all motherf*ckers know we came over here on a boat by a white man. So, if you wanna fight me, f*ck you, I’ll murder you…And now, let me put my teeth back in my mouth.
Imagine what it must have been like to be the one white dude in that crowd.
