Every year on September 11, someone comes out and offends a whole bunch of people by making a joke (or a point) about the attacks that occurred 14 years ago. But Devo singer Jerry Casale’s 9/11-themed wedding, complete with a Twin Towers cake and box cutter party favors, was on a whole ‘nother level. Casale is now apologizing for the event and explaining that it was all the work of one of his friends, against his knowledge.

“I apologize to anyone who was offended,” Casale told Billboard, noting that he and his wife Krista Napp chose the date because it was the last day before their marriage application expired. They were married at the Beverly Hills Courthouse and left the reception to a friend, who surprised them with the 9/11-themed party.

Casale told friends and family who asked about the curious wedding date that he and Napp “are the Twin Towers of love.” He then cited Donald Trump’s original idea for the site, rebuilding the exact same towers as a “f*ck you to anyone who threatens our way of life or freedom to live.”

One friend took that explanation and ran with it, with Casale getting the first taste of what was to come when he saw the box-cutter place settings.

“That was pretty nasty…we thought that the was the end of the reference.”

They went into a back room for desert and found the Twin Towers cake. He told Billboard that he wasn’t happy with his friend’s decision and was shocked to find that someone would sell the photos to TMZ.

“He thought it was some sort of transgressive sick humor, and the problem is, it’s not funny.”

No, it’s definitely not.
