Donald Glover navigates a unique space in that he’s an actually talented comedian/actor and a good musician at the same time. Of course, things weren’t always this way. When he was still primarily doing comedy as a stand-up and a writer on 30 Rock, he unassumingly decided to take a chance and record a mixtape. He talked about the transition on Conan and how he probably didn’t realize it was such a risky decision because of his focus.

“I didn’t think it was a big deal. My mom was like, ‘You have a good job! Why would you do that?’ Also she really wanted to meet Alec Baldwin, so she was like, ‘No! Why are you leaving that!?’ I didn’t think it was a crazy thing. I was just like, ‘Oh, I like music!’ It’s weird, I think it was a bad decision, I just didn’t know it. So it worked out great.”

For what it’s worth, not everything comes easy. But the growth that Childish Gambino has had since his first rap projects is colossal. And he’s still doing great comedy work, too, including his forthcoming FX series Atlanta.

Donald also talked about taking a spill while filming The Martian, and it still made the film, and encountering a sexy coyote on a hike. Watch those clips below.
