While gun control continues to be a hypothetical, ideological debate topic for those in Washington, D.C., the rest of the country are the ones who are feeling the actual results of these mass shootings. With these episodes sadly becoming more and more of a common occurrence, it’s almost easy to become “numb” to them, as President Obama mentioned at a recent press conference.
Well, with that in mind, there are some folks who hope to fight back and inspire some sort of feeling or change in people. Critically acclaimed indie folk artist EMA is one of those people. While her noise rock-spun tunes are usually a bit more ambiguous in meaning, you get the meaning right away here in her new video “Active Shooter.”
Culled from footage of a “training video” of what to do in a mass shooting put out by a local police department, EMA sings over fuzzed out guitars and beats. “Any kid in America/ walk in and you sell them a bullet/ any kid in America/armed good guys are a myth/ never saved no one from sh*t/ armed good guys are a myth/ never saved no one.”
She released the clip along with several useful links, including information about mass shootings in the United States and the successful measures to reduce gun violence in Australia, as well as hotlines to help those considering violence on others or themselves.
It’s pretty easy to disassociate violence from your everyday life when it’s not directly affecting you. You get sad, and then you move on. Musicians like EMA are hoping that you realize that we truly shouldn’t be living life that way.
