The argument that Los Angeles hip-hop is hitting a new zenith isn’t a sloppy one to make. The current best rapper in the world, Kendrick Lamar, hails from Compton. The revivalist of ’90s G-Funk, YG, also made 2016’s best protest song. Freddie Gibbs, an Indiana expat who has resided in Los Angeles for the better part of a decade now is still one of rap’s more imposing and hardened voices. Throw in DJ Quik’s Rosecrans, and Los Angeles really is experiencing one of its best periods of music, ever. Now you can add G Perico to the mix.
Perico’s look is right out of the ’90s with relaxed, permed hair, and day-to-day rhymes about the highs and lows of Los Angeles street life. His recently released All Blue album is so rooted in ’90s G-Funk that it nearly exists as a B-side to Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food LP. It wasn’t until last year’s Sh*t Don’t Stop mixtape however, that more eyes and ears latched onto the South Central rapper. A week after All Blue landed, G Perico returns with “How You Feel,” a squelchy puncher’s anthem that mixes high-concept art galleries, with petty dope boy activity and people from the block who bend to the crooked whims of the LAPD.
In “How You Feel,” G moves from rapping inside of an art gallery where all of the photos are of him in various poses, hairstyles & more to a story about an associate fingers him and his actions to a pair of crooked cops. “F*ck how you feel,” Perico bluntly states on the song’s chorus, choosing a life lived on his own terms rather than someone else’s.
