Donald Trump started a political firestorm and launched himself into the realm of relevance in July with his truly awful comments about Mexicans. Trump has seen serious blowback from liberals and television networks for his hypernationalist views, and it appears that (much like Trump) the dissent will only grow louder as the campaign goes on.
The latest anti-Trump action is a “We Are the World”-style song calling together Hispanic musicians and celebrities for an anti-Trump singalong. Emilio Estefan (husband of Gloria) organized “We’re All Mexican,” a track that includes appearances by Gloria, Shakira, Carlos Santana, Thalia, Pepe Aguilar, Wisin and Wyclef Jean. Radio personality Enrique Santos and chef José Andrés will also appear.
Estefan explained the reasoning behind the track in an interview with Billboard.
“There’s a message being sent out to the world where people are giving opinions that are plain wrong. We need to lift up our pride and show the world what we’re doing.”
Estefan added that he knows Trump, and has no problems with the candidate expressing his thoughts beyond the anti-Hispanic sentiments.
“Trump doesn’t represent anything to me. Everyone has their opinion, and he can have whatever opinion he wants, as long as he doesn’t humiliate my people.”
It’s got to mean something when artists are making a protest song about you before you’re even elected. “We’re All Mexican” is set to drop later this month.
