Last night, the San Francisco Giants hosted Metallica Night at their AT&T Park, which meant not only did fans get to see their hometown team show NO REMORSE on the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers (the Giants won 2-1), they were also treated to a performance of “The National Anthem” by the titans of metal.
Lead vocalist James Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett collaborated on a lively instrumental rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which sounded faintly reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix’s enduring delivery of the national anthem at Woodstock. Fittingly, the bodies of the guitars Hetfield and Hammett used were black, each decorated with the familiar orange interlocking “SF” logo.
Then drummer Lars Ulrich took center stage to throw the ceremonial first pitch. He toed the rubber and uncorked a blooper pitch for a perfect strike. It just so happened that Ulrich’s catcher was Giants closer Sergio Romo, who lists Metallica’s “Whenever I May Roam” as his alternate entry music. (Via)
Meanwhile, my New York Mets paid a wino they found near Flushing Bay to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” No one else would take the job.
